Pictures of the Year 2017

This is just a selection of a few favourite memories and pictures from what’s happened this year.

New Year’s Day: A stroll on Walkhampton Common, Dartmoor

January: A camp at Shelstone Tor, looking across to Paul’s favourite – Blackator. Coldest camp of the year, but at least I finally got to visit the Slipper Stones.
January: An early start on a crisp day walking from Upminster to Grays
March: Binsey, a favourite fell, largely because of the view of the northern part of the Lake District…
…also location for the first art class of the year
March: A spot of painting at Blea Tarn. Later in the day I climbed High Rigg and met Robin (@blgpackinglight) for dinner
March: A section of the Cambrian Way from Ponterwyd to Mallwyd. 4 days of solitude and bogs in the relatively unfrequented area behind Plynlimon
April: A week in Northumberland taking in all the usual places including Hadrian’s Wall
April: A 4 day backpack on Dartmoor’s south Moor with Paul. Final training run for the TGO Challenge
April: home made dehydrated pasta bolognese. This year I started making my own dehydrated backpacking meals. This was a great success and I’ve not bought a commercial dried meal since.
May: Bluebells. I’m not really much of a botanist, but I do enjoy seeing the swathes of bluebells in the woods this time of year
May: TGO Challenge. The start at Dornie
May: TGO Challenge – crossing the Monadhliath
May: TGO Challenge – the shortcut through the Lairig Ghru
May: Challenge – some more Lairig Ghru
May: TGO Challenge – at the finish at Red Castle, Lunan Bay
May: TGO Challenge – the final camp, on the beach at Lunan Bay. Also my 100th wildcamp
June: finding more gems in the Peak District
July: South West Coast Path – the cliffs at Millook. Loved the striations and folds in these Carboniferous cliffs. These inspired a set of 4 abstract paintings
July: Art fair in Pitsea, showing a selection of past works
August: Icebergs off the east coast of Greenland
August: Waterfalls in Iceland
August: Geothermal landscape in Iceland
August: Return to the Briksdal Glacier in Norway. Retreated significantly since my last visit in 2009
September: My watercolour, “Cairngorm Glen” was featured in the “In the Frame” feature in the October edition of TGO Magazine. (Prints available at matthewkingarts.com or simply contact me)
September: Looking down from Bonscale Pike
October: Dartmoor torbagging
October: Assembling at a top secret Dartmoor location for Phil & Sarah’s betrothal ceremony
November: my work awaiting hanging at the 5th Base Gallery in London
November: early morning light over Windermere, seen from Tarn Crag above Grasmere
December: A walk around Tarn Hows and Black Crag
