With the forecast for the following day getting much worse, this was to be the last night of the trip, but I was still considering a late night return home. I approached Great Mell Fell still undecided, so carried a full load of water for a camp anyway. At the end of a long day, I really struggled to get to the top, but made it. I looked for backup places to camp lower down in case I decided it was too windy at the summit – which it was, and with forecast for wind to increase over the next 24 hours, I took the option of seeking a more sheltered pitch. It’s a challenge to find somewhere flat enough if not camping at the summit, and this did slope a bit but it was bearable. A really cold night in contrast to the previous night, and a sense that summer was starting to draw to an end.
